Maryland SoccerPlex Brings Long Time Soccer Administrator Gary Wheeler on Board

Wheeler brings nearly 25 years of soccer experience with him and Soccer Association of Montgomery (SAM) will feel biggest impact

Germantown Md. (April 10, 2018) – The Maryland SoccerPlex has announced that Gary Wheeler will be joining the organization bringing with him nearly 25 years of experience in running tournaments, league management, oversight of referees, scheduling and compliance. He will especially focus his expertise on all aspects of SAM. Mr. Wheeler should be a familiar name to the local soccer community after serving as Director of Operations at Montgomery Soccer Inc. (MSI) for the past 12 years and over 20 years at MSI in various capacities.

“I have known Gary for more than two decades and when the opportunity to bring him on board it was one we could not pass up,” said Maryland SoccerPlex Executive Director Trish Heffelfinger. “His experience and devotion to soccer, particularly youth soccer will be felt by all but particulary by the people involved in SAM.”

Mr. Wheeler fell in love with the game when he started coaching his now 33 year old son when he was in Kindergarten. He quickly immersed himself in every aspect of coaching education. His philosophy was in always leaving the game to the kids, and that playing with friends and classmates was critical to keeping them interested in the game.

“I am grateful to Trish for this opportunity, and am excited to bring my knowledge, energy and enthusiasm to the good folks at the Soccerplex,” said Wheeler. “I know that I can make significant contributions to an already impressive organization and growing league. My goal is to help SAM provide many more players the chance to play at one of the most pristine complex of fields in the country. There’s no better way for them to learn and love the game than to play on perfectly manicured fields.

Mr. Wheeler, who was born and raised in Silver Spring, MD, spent over 25 years as a controller for a transportation company before moving full time into youth soccer. Along with running all aspects of Recreational and Premier/Academy programs and he also donated his time to various committess and Boards around the local soccer community. For the National Capital Soccer League (NCSL) he was a member of the Adjudication Committee as well as the NCSL’s Board and Executive Committee. For the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association he served on the Adjudication Committee and he has also been a board member for The Washington Area Girls Soccer League (WAGS).
